HATE CRIMES: Rose 17 Percent Last Year

TeeRoy's 2 Cents

  • Sad that hate is becoming more popular.
  • Some believe that political rhetoric is fueling some hate crimes.
  • Can't we all just get along?

There were 7,175 reported hate crimes in 2017, according to law enforcement agencies, up from 6,121 in 2016. Part of the increase is due to more police departments giving their data to the FBI, while a number of other departments still don't share reports of hate crimes with the feds.

About three in every five hate crime focuses on an individual's race or ethnicity, while one and five were targeted for their religion.

Breaking down the more than 7,000 reported incidents, 2,013 focused on black Americans while Jewish Americans were the targets of 938 Americans. People were targeted for their sexual orientation 1,130 times, according to the FBI. (The Washington Post)
